Introduce
SMED (Single-Minute Exchange of Dies) is considered a key improvement method that helps businesses increase productivity, reduce inventory and save costs by shortening die/machine changeover times from hours to just minutes. Mastering SMED demonstrates your commitment to operational efficiency and the ability to create a tangible positive impact for the organization.
At LSSI, our SMED course is designed to be practical, providing comprehensive knowledge of SMED principles, 8 core improvement strategies, and tools such as ECRS, 5S and visual management. Students will be guided to analyze setup operations, identify improvement opportunities and build effective implementation plans, suitable for all businesses that need to increase flexibility and optimize production processes.
Training objectives
- Understand the concept, role and benefits of the SMED method
- Understand the 4 steps of SMED implementation: observe – classify – convert – improve
- Distinguish between internal and external operations during setup
- Analyze current conversion processes to identify waste and bottlenecks
- Develop a systematic plan to improve setup time
- Use tools such as video analytics, workflow diagrams (Spaghetti chart, Time chart…) to evaluate and suggest improvements
- Form a mindset of continuous improvement and a spirit of process optimization.
- Actively coordinate between departments (production, maintenance, QA…) to effectively deploy SMED on site

Prerequisites
The Rapid Transformation in Manufacturing course does not require any prerequisites and the program welcomes all new members.
